Community


Over the many years that Uplands Golf Club has existed, the members have invested their time to volunteering, supporting and developing initiatives to assist in a range of fundraising efforts that impact the community. Their contribution is significant and widely appreciated by the following local charities and organizations:

  • The PGA McKenzie Open picks a charity and has been supporting Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island raising approximately $31,000 each year since 2015.
  • During the year Uplands issues between 400-500 gift certificates which benefit many local businesses fundraising efforts, along with donating to local schools, hospitals, service groups, other golf clubs, and local sports clubs.
  • Uplands Golf Club contributes towards fundraising efforts for Multiple Sclerosis and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada which raises approximately $130,000 each year through various fund-raising efforts.
  • The Uplands Women’s Division Luncheon held in December of each year raises money for buying turkeys for Christmas hampers and as raises approximately $1,300 each year.
  • At the Uplands Christmas party a raffle is held in December and it raises approximately $1300 each year and is donated to the Mustard Food Bank.
  • Uplands Golf Club hosts the Thrifty Foods Youth Golf Clinic each year;
  • Encourages local kids interested in golf/encourages kids to become interested;
  • Provides kids the opportunity to learn from the Vikes;
  • Encourages leadership, physical activity, and the opportunity to take part in the Open and see the possibilities of a future in golf (passes included in registration fee);
  • The Uplands Women’s Business Group Christmas party held each year holds a raffle each year and raised over $500 for the past two years.
  • The UVIC Golf Classic Tournament and dinner held in the first week of August each year at Uplands Golf Club helps to raise funds to sponsor the VIKES golf teams and other athletic programs.
  • Uplands Golf Club is the proud host to numerous Vikes Golf Teams Performance Tour events, Zone 5, City and Provincial Events.
  • Held on the First Monday in May each year, The Alex Campbell Conquer Classic Golf tournament is held at 3 different golf courses; Gorge Golf Course, Bear Mountain and Uplands with Uplands being the host club for dinner;
  • In the last 32 years the tournament has raised over $1,000.00 thanks to many supporters;
  • Supports Vancouver Island Lodge through Canadian Cancer Society;
  • Provides low cost housing for up to 2,000 Island cancer patients per year, as well as nursing supervision and volunteer driving services;
  • Has raised $1,000,000 over the past 33 years;
  • Donations have provided upgrades to emergency call services, a shuttle van, new carpets, new kitchen appliances, repaired the deck, replaced carpet, HVAC system, etc.
  • Since 1978, the Uplands Golf Club Heart Tournament (both Men’s and women’s) has raised more than $2.87 million for Victoria Hospitals Foundation to bring leading-edge cardiac equipment to Island Health and its Heart Health program at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Together, we have made this outstanding golf experience the longest running, most successful charity tournament in BC.
  1. The Hugh Carberry Pro-Am Tournament was started in 1974, by Don Billsborough, Brian Carbery and a group of close friends of Hugh who donated the trophy
    • Money raised originally went to the Cancer Society until the Victoria Hospice Society opened.
    • The Pro-Am is one of the longest running charities contributing donations to Hospice since its inception.
    • The last three years of the tournament has seen a large increase in donations, raising at least $20,000 each year.
    • Ian Stone; Don Billsborough; Bruce Rands, Ben Griffin; Bryan, Brent and Brock Carbery; have tried to keep the tournament format the same as Hugh’s close friends wanted it to celebrate his memory.
  2. The Clews Charity Golf Tournament benefits Victoria Hospice Society held in September of each year;
    • Began in October 2012 with 28 players – has grown to 45-50 players;
    • Raised $54,000 over the past 5 years;
    • Includes a silent auction and a dinner only option for non-golfers;
    • In 2014 Adilynn Clews became youngest fundraiser at 4 day’s old – raising $16,000 that year.
